A survey on Thursday revealed that India will have more than 850 million online users by 2025, with Reliance Jio 4G acquiring most of the growth which has added 100 million connections in just seven months, conducted by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
As per the reports, it estimated that by 2020, half of all Internet users in India will be rural, 40 percent of count will comprise of women users and 33 percent will be of 35 years of age or older. The newbie Reliance JioFeature phone will be helping people switching from 2G connections in rural places.
The survey said,”While it took the country eight years to reach 250 million 3G connections, Reliance Jio 4G network added 100 million connections in just seven months.” Moreover, the survey noted, “Digital’s impact is becoming pervasive across all consumer segments. This breaks the earlier trend in the country when the initial digital consumers were male, millennial and mostly metro-based.”
The group further revealed that the devices today are a mix of smartphones (with 3G or better connections) and feature phones with primarily run on 2G connections. However, this trend is now moving towards faster connections and more capable devices.
To be noted, the number of online buyers has risen to 80 million and 90 million from 2014 to 2016. “Digitally influenced spending, currently $45-50 billion a year, is projected to increase more than tenfold, to between $500-550 billion — and to account for 30-35 per cent of all retail sales — by 2025,” the report said. The survey included the changing behavior of Indian consumers in more than 50 product categories through questionnaires and interviews, around 10,000 consumers in 30 locations nationwide took part in the survey.
