The terrific tariff war among telecom companies is always a hot topic ever since Jio has marked its entry back in September 2016. Many incumbents like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, and BSNL are always in the race to launch bundled plans to allure the customers. As to recall, a few months back, Bharti Airtel’s chief executive Gopal Vittal said that the telco will adapt voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology in key markets in the next few months and commented, “We are future-proofing our network for VoLTE and looking at deploying equipment switch in key markets.” Now going to latest update, Airtel might launch its much rumored VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service in an event today. In his latest statement on Monday, he added “We already have voice service. Customers don’t care for call technology. We are clear that our VoLTE is in works, and trials are on in 5 cities. Towards the end of the year, we should be able to launch it.”
Other telco companies are surely providing 4G data services in the country, but Reliance stands tall and alone when it comes to providing VoLTE services. Throwing light on VoLTE services, it allows an operator to offer both voice and data without switching between bands and is voice just another application that rides on an LTE data network. The legacy circuit-switch technology is currently adopted by other companies. The users will be able to enjoy voice calls at lower costs.
A few handsets have already started receiving Airtel carrier update with support for VoLTE technology. Apple India support page also shows the support for Airtel VoLTE in India for iPhone 6 and later. Moreover, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is also rumored to get the update. It would be interesting to see a head to head competition between these two big companies.
